While WWI continued and Russian troops, having participated in the war, were billeted in different countries, profoundly significant political changes occurred in their native country: Tsar Nikolai II’s abdication, the Provisional Government with Kerensky as a prime minister of Russia, and The Revolution of 25 October 1917.
16,000 of the Russian Army were staying in France. Gumiliov, as an aide-de-camp, was posted at the so-called Russian Dispatch headquarters in Paris. Communication with the Russian government was passing through telegrams, but they reached the Army‘s headquarters regularly a week later.
